Former President Trump Indicted for Mishandling Classified Documents

Former President Donald Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury on Tuesday in connection with his alleged mishandling of more than 100 classified documents, including some marked as "top secret." The indictment is the culmination of a year-long investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the probe into Trump's mishandling of classified information and his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

According to the indictment, Trump knowingly and willfully retained and concealed national defense information after being repeatedly asked to return it to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The indictment also alleges that Trump obstructed the federal government's investigation into his mishandling of classified information by refusing to cooperate with investigators and providing false or misleading information.

The indictment is a major development in the Justice Department's ongoing investigation into Trump's conduct since leaving office. It is the first time in US history that a former president has been indicted by a federal grand jury. The indictment could lead to criminal charges against Trump, which could potentially disqualify him from running for president again in 2024.
